Ra is the pharaoh’s cat, living the
life of luxury and laziness in the palace. His best friend is Khepri, a dung
beetle. One day an amulet goes missing and a young servant girl is accused. Ra
doesn’t think much of it, but the kindly Khepri helps to motivate him to help
solve the mystery. Together they start seeking clues, usually by way of meeting
up with the other palace pets, a baboon, a cheetah, and many more. Will Ra be
able to solve the crime and help the little girl?
I love any book set in or about
ancient Egyptian history. This book creates a rich world, full of fully fleshed
out characters, subplots, and authentic Egyptian words and terminology. I think
readers might be put off by the length and a surprising amount of complexity. I
wish this book was half the length and had a few less characters, because when
you add in the Egyptian terminology, it might be a bit too much for those
readers who would be drawn to a cat detective book.
