As a first nation child, Ukpik is interested in her new husky puppy and the traders who come to visit her village. The traders bring utensils, which her tribe has never seen. She is curious though and figures out how to use them and then teaches everyone else. Will she adapt to the modern changes that come? Will she find a good name for her new puppy? Una Huna is a view into the Inuit way of life.
Aglukark writes a simple story from a child's perspective. For those rounding out a diverse collection of books, it gives a window into culture that you may not have experienced in other books. She also uses a lot of Inuit words and has a helpful glossary for non-Inuit readers. The text also explains meanings frequently and though the illustrations are pretty and interesting, the prose is a bit lack luster. With a predictable ending, I found myself liking the puppy!
