Who doesn’t
love the story of Rapunzel? Here it is in a mostly traditional form. I find I relate
to this story more as an adult, as it features pregnancy cravings so profound that it leads to
the husband sneaking into a witches garden to fulfill. After he is caught, he
must give up the child to the witch. Who then raises her well, but as she grows
older, keeps her in a tower for safekeeping. Until she meets a prince and
everything changes.
This book is a
re-release of a 1982 edition. Its so lovingly illustrated that it stands up well
to the test of time and isn’t dated looking in the least. The detailed and top
notch illustrations do a lot to set the mood and the magic of the story. I
think this is a classic that school libraries should have on hand, and of
course, pair it with my favorite re-telling to put a modern spin on it: Falling for Rapunzel
by Leah Wilcox.
