As readers
count up to ten they discover a fox is stalking hens in a henhouse at night. Two
sly eyes, five snug eggs, and so on. The artwork is simple and large enough to
share with a group.
This book is a
dose of reality I guess, as it appears the hens get eaten. I think children
will be worried about that, worried about the eggs, and confused if they were
truly eaten or not. The surprise ending is also a bit confusing, with the
number 100 suddenly making an appearance with animals that were not introduced
before. The artwork is lovely, with the fox a well-crafted character.
