BUYING ADVISORY: PRE-K - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Four astronauts are headed to Mars! They launch into space in a rocket, join the spaceship, and experience weightlessness. They have to strap their sleeping bag to the walls to sleep! They work on experiments, exercise, and wait - it takes a long time to fly to Mars.
Bob Kolar's illustrations are great. His characters are darling, expressive and, although they are adults, they look enough like kids for the reader to completely relate.. I loved the song lyrics, but I especially loved the rest of the text, which teaches about the voyage, and everything the astronauts do. Oh!! As the rocket docks with the spaceship, gravity is gone and the book has to be turned over on the next page - I really felt weightless for a moment! So, it reads reads backwards for a bit before it turns again - I love that so much! Skin tone and hair color of the characters indicate a diverse group of astronauts.
