BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Both Mae and April want to help the new animal shelter. Mae sets up a lemonade stand - her profit will go to help buy cat food. April writes a letter to the newspaper asking people to get a dog from the shelter. Mae's lemonade stand is a big success, but April is hoping she has the right words for her letter to be successful, too.
AJ loved April and Mae and the Animal Shelter. She liked that the friends helped encourage each other, she liked that they have different pets and are still best friends. I loved the great pictures and the simple well-written story - perfect for a beginning reader. Based on the illustrations, April has dark skin, Mae's skin is light. There is nothing culture or race specific in the text.
