Even as a young girl, Hallie Morse Daggett was a nature lover. She hiked with her sister and brother, and was a fisher and hunter, but she fear fire. She decided that when she grew up she wanted to help the forest service. But they weren't hiring women. Hallie finally convinced Ranger M. H. McCarthy that she was the best person for the job. And she was, her first season at the lookout station, she spotted 40 fires and only 5 acres of forest burned.
Another delightful picture book biography! David Hohn's illustrations are great, I love all the animals in the pictures, and I want to visit Hallie and her cabin in the woods. Working for the Forest Service was my dream, too. So happy to learn about the woman who started it all! Hallie Morse Daggett is white.
