BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - AVERAGE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: ADVISABLE
The three Billy Goats Gruff all agree that they passed the troll on the bridge so that they could join their cousins with all the green grass on the other side of the bridge – but who has the best version of the story?
Though billed as the full story – I don’t see much different here from the original. While it is told in a different pattern, the story itself is just the same. The illustrations, however, rescue this book from just being ordinary. I’d prefer to read the original story, with its rhythmic pattern and use these illustrations. I’d also probably add this book to my small collection of picture books that try take a classic and do something different with it and don’t hit the mark – they are good for a classroom critique exercise.
