Mary Seacole was a Jamaican-born nurse. Taught by her mother to care for the sick, she knew how to make medicines from herbs, bind wounds and help the sick and injured. Experienced in caring for the British soldiers in Kingston, she tried to join Florence Nightingale's nurses corp. in the Crimea, but was rebuffed because of her race, so Mary started her own convalescent home and followed the battles to help where she could.
Why have I never heard of Mary Seacole before? Such a brave woman despite prejudice and circumstances. Susan Goldman Rubin tells a thorough story and Pope's illustrations are expressive and historically accurate. Includes source notes and a bibliography.
