Julio Tello was born in the late 1800 in Peru. As a boy he loved to explore the caves and burial grounds of the ancient Peruvians, his ancestors, sending samples to museums to be studied. As an adult, he was able to run a museum himself, but also did a great deal of archaeological work himself, showing that Peruvian Culture is thousands of years old and developed independently of other cultures.
I especially loved this picture book biography because of the interesting topic (archaeology) and the fact that the subject is indigenous Peruvian. Bilingual - in Spanish and English - this is not only relevant to many of my English Language Learners, but also accessible. I loved the illustrations - I went back after reading it to look more closely at the pictures, I wonder how many were based on photographs, the details were great! Includes author and illustrator notes as well as source information
