Old Misery by James Sage, illustrated by Russell Ayto. PICTURE BOOK. Kids Can Press, 2018. $17.
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) – OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Old Misery lives with her cat and has only her apple tree to treasure. However, this does not stop everyone from stealing her apples! She helps a mysterious stranger who then grants her wish to protect her prized apples. This may turn out to be a case of being careful what you wish for.
The illustrations for this strange tale are appropriate to the tone of the story and provide Edward Gorey vibes. The writing, however, will only benefit from a read aloud from a dedicated reader who will provide the theatrics necessary to bring the tale to life. Otherwise, a silent read will reveal that the plot proceeds much too quickly with an ending that is less than satisfying.
