No Kimchi for Me! by Aram Kim -- OPTIONAL

No Kimchi for Me! by Aram Kim. PICTURE BOOK. Holiday House, 2017. $17. 9780823437627.

BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW

Yoomi loves all of her grandma's cooking, from her seasoned bean sprouts to her tiny anchovies, but one thing she can't tolerate is kimchi. To her it's too spicy and smelly and disgusting. When her older brothers make fun of her for having babyish tastes, Yoomi decides to find a way to tolerate this big kid food. But the task ends up being much more difficult than Yoomi ever expected.

Many kids will relate to the dilemma of not wanting to eat certain foods, but the solution of adding those foods to other dishes is helpful in only a few cases. While it can be interesting and informative to read about other cultures, in this case the kimchi IS the main cultural reference, and since kimchi is a speciality food that none of the students I surveyed had ever heard of, both the learning experience and the urgency of the character's goal are likely to be lost on most children. Perhaps No Kimchi for Me! would go over better in an area where kimchi is more popular.
