ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Mr. Wolf is excited for his first day as a fourth-grade
teacher. He busily gets things ready, then falls asleep in his classroom while
his seventeen students are mostly slumbering in their beds. There is one who is too nervous to
sleep, and another whose noisy baby sibling is keeping her awake. One student is asleep in a car.
This student, Margot, and her dad are just arriving to their new home. Then
begins chapter one, the dawning of the first day of the new school year.
Each
student is portrayed by a different animal, and student readers will find
familiar personalities – the new kid, the noise-maker, the jokester, the
sleepy head. They will also enjoy the hilarious yet familiar situations of the
class during the first day – the bus ride, meeting the teacher and other
students, bathroom antics, fart jokes, a visit to the library, a math pretest,
lunch and recess, pests in the classroom, a missing student. Additionally, young
readers will also enjoy glimpses of the first day as experienced by the
teacher. Very clean, very charming, very recommended.
