Sydney is thrilled to see a live turtle while on a field trip to an aquarium. When she discovers that turtles and other sea creatures are in danger because of humans' trash, she decides she must do something about it. She learns more about the issue, educates her brother and earns his cooperation, then uses some good S.T.E.A.M. skills to get the word out to their neighbors.
Sydney is a great character -- smart, determined, and resourceful. It is nice to see an emphasis on S.T.E.A.M. in a story, and the book communicates the need for readers to control how much trash they use. While students may not read this book on their own, it would be a good whole-class introduction to units on various S.T.E.A.M. skills. It would also work well for a unit on ecology, especially around Earth Day.
