El and Jo are best friends. They are the same size, in the same class and best friends. Being the two smallest students in class also binds them together. However, Jo starts growing and soon she is taller than El. At the end of the school year, the teacher gives each student a plant to take home and watch over the summer. El gets an aster and it is slow growing. El feels bad for not growing like Jo and for getting a plant that doesn't seem to want to bloom. Come fall, when the tow friends get back together they are in for a several delightful surprises.

I loved this cute story about growing up, how we are different and how we grow at different rates. The girls have a cute friendship, and the book also has some fun facts about plant life cycles regarding the plants the students take home to care for. Lots of good things to talk about! I highly recommend this book.
