Felix wants to please Fiona, his new best friend, so he agrees to dance as a pixie in the big talent show. But after they win first prize, a few of the other guinea pigs start teasing Felix about his costume and dancing. Fiona confronts the bullies, and Felix's mother gives him advice about how to handle them, but it's not until Fiona teaches him a special confidence trick that he is able to vanquish the bullies on his own -- and also stand up to Fiona, too.
This simple story would provide a good segue into discussions about how to fend off bullies and how to fake confidence until you really have it. It employs Wells's signature illustrative style, and gets the point across without being too preachy. I love seeing a story where a girl and boy become best friends and it's not considered weird.
