Cinderella of the Nile by Beverley Naidoo - ADVISABLE

Cinderella of the Nile by Beverley Naidoo, illustrated by Marjan Vafaeian. PICTURE BOOK. Tiny Owl, 2019. $18. 9781910328293

BUYING ADVISORY: EL - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW

This is the Egyptian version of Cinderella and has very old origins. In this tale, a girl is kidnapped and sold into slavery in a few different countries. She is bought by a man who gives her shoes because she loves to dance. When a bird steals her shoe and drops it on the prince, the story we all know, becomes clear.

I love the discussion the books opens up about the universality of some stories and how they originate in different places and shift as cultures blend. But the story here is a bit long and very depressing, with quirky illustrations.
