DeVos has written a colorful, fact-filled "first field guide to the singing giant of the ocean". Young Zoologist - Humpback Whale teaches the reader about whale behavior, breeding and feeding, whale songs, mothers and calves and much more.
As a fan of whale watching myself, I found the facts about humpbacks shared in this book to be fascinating and engaging. The pages are colorful with great illustrations which will entertain young readers, but are text-heavy so may appeal more to upper elementary students. I had one little gripe about the book. It began with a letter from the author to the reader claiming to be embarking on an adventure, exploring humpback whales together, and then didn't really continue with the author-as-guide and reader-as-adventurer concept. It was just lots of facts broken into two-page spreads covering various interesting categories, and then the book ended abruptly with a glossary and index. This book doesn't read like a story but is full of interesting information.
