BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
A young girl is at home and feeling bored when a magpie comes and taps on the window. The little girl strikes up a conversation with the bird and asks its name. The magpie responds by asking the girl to give him a name. She does, and then names a tree, a butterfly, and a cat as well. Her “new game” to give things names keeps her busy and eliminates her boredom.
The overall theme of the book is summarized nicely on the last page “Everything, everyone, needs its own name!” This is a simple, gentle book. The colors are pretty and the basic but detailed illustrations are a cool mixed art style - maybe watercolor and colored pencil. This book may spark a bit of imaginative discussion, but overall it’s just not very engaging.
