BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3), EL - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
A neighborhood, made up of different animal families, didn't know each other very well. Camilla, the frantic mother hen of 10, just assumed her neighbor, Mr. Martinez ( a dog), wouldn't want to be friends. From the outside looking in, they didn't seem to have much in common. Mr. Martinez automatically assumes that his neighbors don't want to know his secret talents. Also, does he know who his neighbor really is?
In the Neighborhood is a fun story that shows to not always judge a book by its cover and to not make assumptions about others. It provides a good example of a community. This is an entertaining book that teaches readers what a community really is. The story shows funny examples of what happens when you make assumptions about others without actually getting to know them. The illustrations were great. My four-year-old enjoyed this story and found it humorous, but it could be best in any elementary grade.
