AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Me Gusta is written as a bilingual narrative about love. A young Latina girl share things that she loves in her life. She loves her parents, ice cream, and running through the sprinklers. Unfortunately, she also experiences people saying mean words to her and posters that discriminate against her. These are things she doesn't love.
The plot is simple, yet deals with big emotions. As you read the text in English, you also are given the Spanish translation for many words or phrases. I liked this book because it was told in such a simple way, yet dealt with big issues like prejudice. It was fun to read out loud because of the Spanish translations. The reader will be engaged because they are able to learn Spanish vocabulary words along the way.
