102yo Virginia fishes for lobster with her son. As the traps come in, she checks and measures and throws back the ones they can't keep. But when a crab bites her with its claw, they must go back to shore and visit a doctor. When he asks what she was doing out there, she remembers her childhood on the island, and missing her family while she went to school on the mainland. As a teen, she learned to pilot her own boat and haul in her own lobster traps. After she married, she worked several jobs, but none of them were what she loved - lobstering, so her husband took her on the boat with him.
I love that Hinrichs researched the story alongside Virginia herself. Jamie Hogan's illustrations are nostalgic and sweet. Sometimes the pictures say more than the words, especially when words aren't enough (the picture of the couple in a rowboat - be still my heart!) A lovely story of resilience and fighting to do what you love. Contains a recipe for lobster rolls! I'm excited to add Virginia's story to my picture book biography section. Virginia is white.
