Soon after Elbert was born, he floated in the air. As he grew, he continued to float and his mother continued to reach up to feed him and help him. Several people had ideas about how to keep him on the ground. His mother just continued to climb up to reach him. When Elbert went to school the teachers also had ideas on how to keep Elbert on the ground. Elbert continued to float and his mother continued to encourage him to be himself. She knew that he would eventually find the place where he belonged among the people who would accept him for who he was.
The watercolor illustrations are fresh and engaging. I like that no matter how many people tried to change Elbert, his mother continued to support him and encourage him to be himself.
