Sova's mother is a scientist who studies owls. But each time Sova asks to come with her to watch for the owls she is told "not yet", and that sometimes a scientist must wait. Sova hasn't been old enough, but tonight, she gets to come! They will be looking for saw-whet owls which are migrating. They set up a delicate "mist net" but at each check of the net they return empty-handed. Until, the last check - a small owl whooshes into their net. Finally!
I loved the voice of Night Owl Night - perfect for a quiet read before bed. Her worries about "what if we catch one" are perfectly answered by her responsible, scientific mother. I loved watching how carefully they weighed, measured and banded the owl. And the illustration of the release was divine, with Sova imaging that she was flying, too. Ahhh - I loved Night Owl Night. Contains descriptions of the owls mentioned in the story with a QR code on each illustration that links to allaboutbirds.org where you can hear their call (so cool!) Author's note includes further information on the owl banding program, website links and books for further reading. Sova and her mother are Black.
