AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

“DNA is the ABC of what makes you, you and what makes me, me.” Written in rhyming verse, Hooray for DNA teaches the very basic concept of all living things being related because of shared DNA.

The idea of the reader being part llama and bat and cougar and giraffe and “the whole wacky lot of us? Part hippopotamus!” may confuse kids but it will certainly delight them. Thompson does a great job of breaking down complex concepts into kid-friendly bits of info throughout the story. She then includes more detailed information about DNA in the back matter, plus a DNA scavenger hunt as well as book, video, and website resources to help the reader explore some more. Pizzoli’s illustrations are fun and colorful and just right! Great book for a STEM day read - Thompson even included a page comparing building with DNA chemical bricks to building with LEGO.
