The boys on the small Thai island could only play soccer one or two times a month, when the tides receded far enough that a big enough strip of beach was exposed. Using their creativity, they labored hard and built their own small soccer field out of the scraps and remains of buoyant items around the village. They took an even bigger chance when they ventured to the mainland to participate in an official tournament. Turns out that even practicing an a small, undulating field can build the right skills.
What a joyous book! Ingenuity, perseverance, or life in a small, floating village – so many themes to touch upon. Pair this with Kate Milway’s Banana Leaf Ball for a look at the universality of soccer.
