. PICTURE BOOK Candlewick, 2021. $17. 9781536203073

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

You can do just about anything you want if you use your imagination and read a book. Reading a book is like stepping on a train that takes you to all the places you learn about and lets you experience things without ever leaving your chair. There's no buddy like a book.

"No Buddy Like a Book" was an advertisement for books, not any specific books, just reading in general. The narrator recounts all the amazing things they can do because they read books. From bottling moonlight to building a telescope and traveling all over the world (but only in their imagination). The cover and title made me pick it up - I did like Brianne Farley's illustrations, but the text was disappointing. I'm not sure I connected with the train's purpose, is it about reading or about travel and how do they really connect? Also, it felt like it was a little heavy-handed - too much about how you need a good imagination, not that you need a good book.
