Manjhi Moves a Mountain by Nancy Churnin, illustrated by Danny Popovici. PICTURE BOOK. Creston Books, 2017. $18.
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ADVISIBLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Manjhi lives in a village where there is poverty and strife. On the other side of the mountain is a village that prospers. Manjhi is determined to find a way to unite the villages even if it means moving a mountain.
The fact that this is based on a true story will elevate interest level and overcome average writing. The story would benefit from being read aloud with whole class discussions bringing more information about Manjhi’s story and also the themes of perseverance and determination. The illustrations are beautiful and compliment the story well.
