Frieda was the only woman at the produce market in Los Angeles, and she was the one who was willing to try new, exotic fruits and vegetables. The ones she liked, she marketed to the restaurants and grocery stores around her, popularizing many new items such as kiwi fruit, purple potatoes, dragon fruit, and many, many more. So if you eat something besides potatoes, tomatoes, or bananas, chances are Frieda ate it first.

What a fun introduction to a little-known woman! I remember the introduction of some of these items, but I had no idea that it was one woman who brought them to us in America! A great resource for a classroom lesson – especially if you had students research and trace where Frieda’s fruits and veggies originated.
