Winston and Sophie see a sign in town - someone needs a home for their chickens. Mommy thinks backyard chickens are a good idea, so even though they live in the city, the family prepares for the arrival of 5 chickens. They build coops and learn about how to care for them, but the real education happens once they arrive - each bird has a different personality, and the kids have to try lots of ideas before the chickens start laying eggs.
My family raised chickens when I was a little girl, and I could really relate to these experiences (we weren't allowed to name our chickens, however, for obvious reasons). Barbara's illustrations are delightful - the chickens have personality without looking silly, and the children are adorable. I loved that poop was such a big deal - because it really is - chickens poop a lot. Includes an author's note about backyard chickens and a great chart which tells about each bird, where she comes from, how large she is and even what color egg she will lay.
