BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) – ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Zoom Squirrel wants to sleep under the stars, something he has never tried before. In an effort to support Zoom, Zip Squirrel and many of Zoom’s friends all show up to encourage him. The amount of energy the squirrels bring to support Zoom, makes it so Zoom can’t fall asleep. He asks for peace and quiet, but that turns into a competition between the group of squirrels in charge of peace and the other group in charge of quiet. Eventually the sun comes up and the stars disappear, making it so Zoom doesn’t sleep under the stars.
I love Mo Willems, but this book is all over the place. The original story of Zoom and his squirrel friends is cute, and I wish it would end there. But, it keeps going and going with facts about the stars and sun as well as “corny” jokes told by acorns. The non-fiction facts are also a lot higher reading level than the early reader level that the rest of the book is on. The illustrations and the friendship shown by the squirrels is adorable and I think early readers will feel satisfied that they read so many pages.
