A Polar Bear in the Snow by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Shawn Harris. PICTURE BOOK Candlewick Press, 2020. $18. 9781536203967
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) – OPTIONAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
A polar bear wakes up from the snow and slowly appears in the white landscape. As he makes his way across the snow, many arctic creatures watch him walk past and wonder where he is going. Eventually the polar bear jumps into the sea and plays in the water. When he is finished playing, he starts to walk off into the white again.
The illustrations used in this book are paper cuts and it is very white, with a bit of black and blue. The pictures are creative and imaginative. The text is minimal, and the bear’s adventure is anti-climactic, with him dance/swimming in the water. I like Mac Barnett, but this book is really just a half-finished idea that feels more like a musing about a polar bear. The appeal of this book is the illustrations and the creative appearance of the polar bear as it shape forms out of the snow.
