A Dog Named Doug by Karma Wilson, PICTURE BOOK. Margaret K. McElderry Books (Simon & Schuster), 2018. $18. 9781442449312
BUYING ADVISORY: Pre-K, EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
Doug the dog likes to dig -- so much, in fact, that he scratches tunnels through every page as he races toward the end of his book.
The rhyming text works well, and the plot line is a lot of fun, but it's the hilariously creative illustrations in A Dog Named Doug that really make the book shine. In many parts, Doug's trenches or leftover dirt piles form the words themselves. In others, little details and facial expressions elicit smiles and laughter from kids. It would be fun for all kind of lessons, but it has become an absolute staple in our lower-grade discussions about the role of illustrations and illustrators in story-telling.
