Oskar arrives at Ellis Island with only his suitcase, a few dollars and a dream. He changes the spelling of his name to Oscar and opens a corner barbershop. Many years later he sells the space and the shop survives through about 100 years of history. After the barbershop, it becomes a clothing store, a candy store, and soup kitchen and many other things. Times change and history marches on, but the little corner store is a big part of it all.
I loved this book and think it would be good for elementary age children studying American History. The book shows children that we live in a country where you can achieve your dreams if you work hard. It would be fun to study each part of history that this little corner shop was part of. The illustrations are beautiful and detailed and tell the story all by themselves. The words and illustrations work well together and really complement each other. What a beautiful book!
