The Legend of the First Unicorn by Lari Don, illustrated by Natasa Ilincic. PICTURE BOOK Kelpies (Floris Books), 2020. $18. 9781782506478
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3)-ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Prince Donald has lost his smile and everyone in the kingdom tries to help him get it back. The court magician tried to create a mystical creature to entertain the prince but didn’t have any success. However, the magician’s daughter, Hana, was able to create a beautiful white unicorn. The unicorn caught the attention of Prince Donald who follows it into the woods. As Hana and Donald look for the unicorn, they have many adventures in the woods.
My favorite part of this book is the illustrations that flesh out the story. This is a simple telling that sticks with the main plot yet manages to capture the magic. If you have unicorn lovers, the cover will grab their attention and they won’t be disappointed by the Scottish tale.
