The Bass Plays the Bass: and Other Homographs by Gene Barretta - OPTIONAL

The Bass Plays the Bass: and Other Homographs by Gene Barretta. Christy Ottaviano Books (Henry Holt and Compnay), 2018. PICTURE BOOK. $19. 9781250175076

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Homographs, words that look the same but sound different, are embedded inside the story of an animal music festival. Each spread has a paragraph with two sets of homographs and a full spread illustration.

My third grader was excited about this concept and tried to read this on her own, but she got frustrated and gave up about halfway through. If you don’t know how to pronounce the homographs, the books is very hard to read alone. And reading it aloud to a group is tricky because you need to see the words to know what is going on. Thus, this book is best consumed one on one with an adult and young reader.
