AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
This is the story of two men who independently decided they wanted to study the deepest parts of the ocean, and formed a deliberate collaboration to make that happen. Otis explored the water from an early age, making his own scuba gear. Will was a published explorer, covering a variety of landscapes and topics. Together they designed a spherical hatch and bravely sealed themselves inside to sink to greater depths than had ever been explored before.
This true story was very interesting and had me captivated from start to end. The book manages the perfect balance between text and illustrations; for such a complex story, there is not an overwhelming amount of reading. The pictures are a mix of sketch strokes and realistic renderings, which I didn’t find overly compelling artistically.
