Lights, Camera, Carmen! by Anika Denise - ADVISABLE

Lights, Camera, Carmen! by Anika Denise, illustrated by Lorena Alvarez Gómez, PICTURE BOOK Abrams Books for Young Readers (Abrams), 2018. $17. 1419731696

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Carmen loves putting on shows in her living room but wants to perform for a larger audience, so when she sees a contest to "show the world" how she eats cereal, she gets her little brother to film her doing all sorts of great things while eating Dino-Krispies. But when the judges catch a hidden gem in her audition, Carmen has to remember the biggest rule of acting - the show must go on.

Carmen has so many great ideas (that don't turn out so well) but she keeps trying and her brother is so supportive. The illustrations are fun and bright - Carmen is adorable, and the text includes expressions in Spanish. A great book to talk about growth mindset and dealing with disappointment.
