In what appears to be the grounds of a dog shelter, the dogs are all playing in their own way with their own groups, except for Little Brown. Little Brown is grumpy and it is unclear to the other dogs if he is grumpy because he is all alone or he is all alone because he is grumpy. They consider trying to figure it out but decide they will wait till tomorrow to do so.
This is a bit of a downer of a book. Little Brown is all alone and there isn’t a resolution to this. The illustrations are brown and muted to match the tone. The book does provide a great platform for talking about isolation and the reasons and effects, but without that classroom conversation, this book may be lost on a solitary reader.
