Night Job by Karen Hesse - ADVISABLE

Night Job by Karen Hesse illustrated by G. Brian Karas, PICTURE BOOK Candlewick Press, 2018, $17. 9780763662387

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Dad cleans a school from late evening to early morning, and on Fridays he brings his son along. The two listen to the radio as they clean the halls and the cafeteria, and dad continues even after the boy falls asleep. It's special time spent together - while getting the job done.

I loved the quiet tone - like the night is just them and the sound of the radio, or the brooms or the motorcycle. The muted grey tones of the mixed media illustrations look like it's the middle of the night. Told from the boy's point of view, this is a great father/son book - with no issues or problems at all. Loved it!
