A snapping turtle named Fire Chief is very lucky because he was one of the few turtles to hatch and survive to adulthood. He was also lucky to choose to live in a pond near a fire station. Every fall, Fire Chief crawled out of his pond, crossed the road, and spent the winter burrowed in mud in a larger pond. One fall, Fire Chief was hit by a car while crossing. The firemen found him and wanted to help him. Could they find anyone around who knew how to help a snapping turtle?
Montgomery tells a warmhearted true story about a turtle and the conservationists who helped give him a second chance. I liked reading the extra information in the back matter. Patterson's realistic illustrations are expressive, detailed, and beautiful.
