Lorraine Hansberry's father wanted to make a difference. When she was a young girl, he moved his family to an all-white community in Chicago. When they residents tried to push them out because they were black, her father sued and it went all the way to the Supreme Court. As an adult, Lorraine wanted to make a difference herself. She was a writer, and wanted to tell her family's story in a play. She called it A Raisin in the Sun, but had a hard time writing it as well as getting it produced.
You know, I've been familiar with this play since I was an junior high, and I never knew the author was an African American woman. I enjoyed reading her story, and finding out who her mentors were, what her life was life and the impact from both her parents and herself. A nice addition to the school's picture book biographies or in the 790s with the theatre books. Hansberry is LGBT and African American
