BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3), EL – ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Angélica has just spent a delightful summer with her family in the Dominican Republic, where her grandfather taught her how to play the musical percussion instrument, la güira. However, when she gets back home to New York, she struggles to find a place where she can play her beloved instrument, and remember all the people she loves.
A cute story with lots of diversity in the storytelling. I liked learning about the significance of la güira and how Angélica was able to bring everyone together in the end. Realistically though, I could see how it would be annoying to have a young child constantly scratching at the instrument and always underfoot, so it’s definitely written for a younger audience in mind.
