He read about Jim Thorpe and Buster Charles and dreamed of being an athlete, and of going to the Olympics. But the racism he faced made achieving that dream difficult.
A great autobiography of Lakota athlete Billy Mills. S.D. Nelson's illustrations are beautiful, incorporating authentic cultural images as well. The story is wonderful, I cried reading it. It's moving and poignant and hopeful. A sure purchase for my library. Includes photographs and an authors note by Mills. Billy Mills is Oglala Lakota.
