AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

Dear Black Boy by Martellus Bennett is an empowering letter to young Black boys, encouraging them to channel their energy and dreams into achieving greatness beyond sports. The book emphasizes the importance of resilience, self-worth, and the pursuit of potential.

The author inspires readers to embrace their identity as black men through heartfelt words and vibrant illustrations. I hadn't quite seen art like this before and it perfectly captured the essence of the story. I felt that this was an encouraging text for any black boy to dream beyond the boundaries that may be put on them. I thought it might be an interesting companion text for novels like Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates or The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, for older audiences.
