BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - NOT RECOMMENDED
AUDIENCE APPEAL: LOW
A young boy chooses Betty White for his "Trailblazing Women" report. His friends haven't heard of her, her teachers and dads think she's not traditional, but the boy is determined. So, he heads to the library where a mysterious woman, peeking through the stacks, tells him everything he's ever wanted to know about Betty White. You can probably guess who she turns out to be.
"That's Betty" read like a data dump. There's a lot of accurate information, with a time line and source material. Here's all this about Betty White, now put it together into your presentation. I was so excited to see a cute biography of Betty White, but the set up was strange, the librarians name (Darian the Vegetarian Librarian?) and it was all too much. The illustrations did a good job of representing some of her television appearances, but it was so weird to have the mystery woman and the boy incorporated into them. I'm going to pass on this purchase.
