Nina Simone (born Eunice Waymon) had music inside her. At the age of 3 could play the piano, she would play at her mother's church and was classically trained by the friend of a woman her mother worked for. She attended Julliard and wanted to move on in her music education, but was denied admission to a prestigious music academy in Philadelphia. She then played the piano in a bar - becoming quite popular, and changed her name along the way as she knew her mother would not approve. Before long she was quite famous and spent the rest of her life using her music to help fight for civil rights.

Another wonderful picture book biography! This one has plenty of content, I feel like I got a great look into Simone's life. The author's note adds some detail, and includes a bibliography and a to a Youtube link I would have loved for a recommended song list. I loved the collage illustrations - so much texture and fabric.
