Runaway Signs by Joan Holub, illustrated by Alison Farrell - OPTIONAL

Runaway Signs by Joan Holub, illustrated by Alison Farrell. PICTURE BOOK. Nancy Paulsen (Penguin), 2020. $18. 9780399172250

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - OPTIONAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE

When school is out for the summer, the kids who illustrate the crossing sign are sad – especially because none of the students seemed grateful for the sign’s work all year. The pair leap off the sign and wander off, gathering other sign charcters as they go. Eventually they realize, however, that their important jobs are not over and they are very needed.

Unfortunately for Holub, Steven Savage produced a book with the same concept just last year, with much better illustrations. Were the illustrations comparable, I would be more excited to embrace this. However, just stick with the first one.
