I’m a Gnome! by Jessica Peill-Meininghaus, illustrated by Poly Bernatene. PICTURE BOOK. Crown Books for Young Readers (Penguin Random House), 2019. $18. 9781524719845
BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ADVISABLE
AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH
The narrator of this book is a gnome who is talking directly to the reader. While walking to the Gnome Festival, he introduces us to all the magical creatures in the forest and is clear on their differences. Only, every difference he lists doesn’t always seem to be true and he realizes that they all have more in common than not.
I had fun reading this book and realizing that one really doesn't know what makes a gnome a gnome beyond their red hat and living in the garden. The illustrations and colors are peppy and the message that oftentimes we have more in common with others than we think is encouraging.
