Tanya, the scientific minded one of the four friends
featured in this series, has taken a new babysitting job for her neighbor whose
niece has come to stay for a while. Her neighbor seems unusually obsessed with her
art, and her niece, Kira, is moody and hard to engage. When Kira starts playing
with a doll that looks exactly like the one in Tanya’s nightmares, Tanya calls
in her friends to help. Is this connected to the Night Queen, and how do they
stop whatever is happening?
I always have students asking for scary books, and this
is a good series to direct them to. There are gaps in the story if you haven’t
read the previous books in the series, but you can still follow along. The few
illustrations do not do justice to the action, but the creepiness is
appropriately chilling for the intended readers. The most violent scene involves biting and scratching dolls.
